The New Mayor Promises a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in First Address
During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.
The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.
A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

- A cap on rents for about 1 million households

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Headwinds
The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
